Cont: from prev post author: Bil OK, so here's a little care notice for all the people who bought chilli plants off us today in the hope you all have good results. first off, they will do fine in those pots for a few weeks yet. When they get top heavy it is time to repot into a bigger pot. Do not plant out into the ground yet without serious anti slug protection. These are small plants as yet and a few hungry slugs can eat them down to the ground. I prefer having them in pots. This enables me to give them full sun for the first harvest and when the heat and light get a bit much I can put them into bright shade. If you don't, the second harvest will be very poor. Fertilise, but don't go insane. Fertiliser is like furniture polish. It will make a good table look better, but it won't fix a cracked top or a split leg.
Keep harvesting. If you leave ripe chillies on the plant it won't grow any more. You can freeze any excess uncooked or cook and freeze or preserve like jam in a sealed jar. I make paste and freeze it in ice cube trays so I have cubes ready to pop into a stew or whatever.
If you have any questions feel free to pm me. We will have a few more chilli plants available for the next week or two, so do say if you would like me to save some for you. They are a good heat, but not so hot that you can't cook liberally with them.

(on another local expat site recently) author: Hi all. I have recently been accepted to this group and we are looking to move to chiclana this year… we have a property to view next week in chiclana de la Frontera, novo sancti Petri and wondered if anyone could give me an idea on the area…..
In addition any recommendations for an area that is driving / walking distance to the beach with a welcoming multi national community. We are a young retired uk couple and are currently living in Estepona ….Thanks in advance
Depends where in Novo. There are some lovely properties, but it can look a bit dead in winter. If you can afford Barossa in the sameish area, north of the main road may be within your budget. Most expats live a bit further out, Rana Verde, or north of the motorway like Pago del Humo where you get more for your money but won't have mains water and may have to be off grid on solar panels. Talk to all the Chiclana agents if you haven't already done so. It's a lovely area compared to the overdevelopment of Estepona. ****
plenty of places on the Pago del Humo with mains water and proper electric - just the Raya end that suffers. From Casa Blas down to the Pinarillo most people have proper electric and many town water ****
I would recommend Jilly at Houseshop. She knows the the area inside out. She would give you good advice on properties in the area as there are a lot of illegal ones in Chiclana. ****
Just stay away from pine trees ****

(on another local expat site recently) author: Honest answer please …. How would you recommend the area and surrounding areas for a young family (early 30s with two kids under 5) relocating from the UK? Taking into consideration things to do with kids, schools, nursery’s, socially and any other points that would be useful. And just overall way of life. We are learning Spanish and our children are too. So of course this will help when we are at conversational level and above in the long run. Thank you so much
We moved from California to Chiclana 2 years ago when our kids were 5, 6, and 9 There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature and outdoor play here, as long as you don’t mind mosquitos and itchy caterpillars One downside is the area is very seasonal and a lot of activities, restaurants, and entertainment places shut down here in the winter…which is really too bad because the weather still is pleasant. While we have experienced some tricky cultural differences, we are happy we made the move and plan to stay here at least a few more years. We’ve all made a lot of really wonderful friends here and it’s a great place to grow up and be a kid. There’s a lot less pressure here compared to the US - reminds me of how it was 30 years ago when I was little (including all the parents smoking ****
This area is an amazing place to bring up a family, I have three kids all born here and wouldn’t move for all the money in the world. Schools are not like in the uk there’s lots to think about but chiclana invest heavily in sports for kids the facilities are amazing almost any sport you can think of is here and available. It’s a safe place with nature, beaches activities galore if you look for it. There’s a community here you can either be involved or not as we are all spread out ****
Hi we moved here almost 6 years ago when our 4 boys were 10, 8, 5 & 18 months. We are very happy with our decision to be honest. We have given them the amazing opportunity of being bilingual and an amazing outdoor & safer upbringing. Like said the schooling approach is different and very textbook driven but don’t underestimate the opportunities outside of school to support it. One thing we were told before we bought was to be careful of the area you chose to live in, make it accessible for schools, shops, beaches, motorways etc and I am very glad we listened to that advice. I’m happy to chat some more about our experience too. It’s not all perfect but in my opinion the right choice for our family. Good luck & enjoy! ****
author: so my preference is to have home based education, and I have an online school I have chosen. But thought I’d see if any feedback on local schools too. This is why having lots to do with my daughters is important as they won’t necessarily get the school socialising aspect if we go with home based education.
send them to a Spanish school. The best thing you can do to integrate them. ****
Agree with above. Education is a big factor. We have a 6, 8 and 10 year old and moved across last year. We are very happy we made the decision. There are a lot of young families here and we are incredibly social, always out having made some amazing friends here. We feel very blessed. My advice is to travel around, rent and visit schools. Due your due diligence on reviews of school, personal experiences and exam results (for later obvs). Good luck ****

(on another local expat site recently) author:Tomorrow we’re making our first visit to Tangier (just a day trip). Can we use Euros? And, much to cover the cost of meals?
Only fish Restaurant Saveur de Poisson Amazing restaurant, very busy , last time I was there ,20e for 5 courses ****
can I ask which port and ferry company you are going from please? We’re interested in doing this in the future too. Thanks. ****
author: We booked through GetYourGuide: thought this was the best option for our first visit. (It’s for a birthday!)
Better using Dirham if you can but they do accept euros - just an awful exchange rate. Best to use your bank card and probably safer ****

(on another local expat site recently) author: Hello! Anyone know of a football pitch here in Chiclana where we can just go and kick a ball around? Thank you!
Not really - there are the football sala pitches that are open until the lights go out but they're all concrete. Proper pitches are used most days and nights and are locked up when not in use. ****
are the football sala pitches open to the public to use? ****
Yes but sometimes you have to wait until others have finished using it - or join in. There are a few about - search futsal Chiclana and the pitches should come up ****
I know there is one at the punto mágico park / walk with zip wire opposite Riu hotel but sometimes it's open sometimes it's closed ! ****

Customs holding goods Hello all. Quick question. I ordered some new glasses from my normal supplier online, they have been witheld at FedEx customs in Madrid. I have received several emails from them in the beginning and I replied to each one with the information they requested and still nothing. I have tried to find a contact number and nothing, no email to get a reply from, my tracking says they are in Madrid awaiting dispatch but this has been since December. Anyone had a similar situation? If so how did you resolve it?I’m begrudging buying new glasses here when I’ve already paid a lot of money for these that have not reached me yet. Any info welcome. Thanks R
I had this R and resolved it via the customs and correos online route. It still took 4 months and I had to pay the customs duty! One day it just turned up, good luck ****
author: thanks for this. I’ve tried to email them several times, even if the company I’ve purchased the glasses from but no joy at all. I’ll just have to keep trying I suppose.
The folk who dispatched the glasses should have labelled them as samples then there is no issue but your only recourse for help is the company that dispatched them ****

I had to deal with FedEx too in Sevilla. Worse experience ever. Not reactive. Not polite. Not helpful. They over charged taxes said they will reimburse it - but ultimately they just offer a voucher! To avoid. Good luck! ****
author: In the end the product made its way back to the company I purchased it from apparently 2 months ago but didn’t offer me a refund until I actually asked where the product was etc. luckily they refunded me within 24 hours…..

(on another local expat site recently) Cont from prev post Customs holding goods Not just customs. Christmas card just arrived a few days ago ****
I bought from an American company and the item was sent from their China warehouse (apparently they have ones in the USA as well so delivery depended on where it came from), and it was held up with customs and FedEx gave me a billion updates saying it's on its way. In the end I got texts saying I owed €10. I wrote to FedEx asking if that was spam or truly the case but no reply from them. Eventually my item did arrived and probably about 2 weeks later a letter came in the post saying I did in fact owe the €10. I won't buy from the company again because of FedEx though. ****
