(on another local expat site recently) author: any of you know if it’s ok to take SUP boards on la Barrosa ? If there are people there doing it, Sancti is packed with them.
we have seen them at la Barossa early evening ****
Yes you can, make sure you go in one of the areas to surf, like in front of The Red Cross, but better in front of the Hotel Las Dunas or Hotel Melia. There are different spots where you are allowed to surf / SUP during summer time. At the spot on the right of Las Dunas hotel, there they do rent them out as well on the beach, so there are always people and it is a lot of fun! ****
author: great I’ll try there as at Sancti petri there’s so much current and traffic I think it might be banned over summer … Sancti petri is packed Just ask at the Policia Local office ..behind the parking ****

(on another local expat site recently) author: Anyone travel regularly on Brittany ferries from Bilbao or Santander to Portsmouth? Just want a little advice. Thanks.
I just love the trip! It’s a mini cruise and if you get lucky you might the ship Galicia. It’s the newest. The food on board is amazing and VERY cheap for a three course dinner with wine. The last time I travelled to the U.K. it was blowing such a gale. Everyone was bouncing off the walls but I was not going to miss my dinner. It’s well worth paying a bit extra for the VIP lounge. You can get snacks and light meals like soups and wine and beer all included. I have done both, the reserved seat and cabin but much prefer the extra expense of a cabin. They are extremely well organised in the embarkation and disembarkation - I was a solo passenger with a car. I have done 2 nights and just the one night. I travel from Cadiz and it all depends on the timing of the sailing I have had to stay the night in Santander which was fine and I found a lovely and very cheap hotel. As I spend a few months in the U.K. I value the freedom of having my own car. ****
author: Thanks for that info. I am only going from Spain to uk - not returning! Can’t seem to find an option to book a cabin one way. Any ideas? ****

We do it with our dog. We have had the occasional very rough crossing when no one was allowed out on deck at all. It’s definitely getting more expensive too. Last year the commodore lounge was £35 and now £85! ****
we found it much more expensive this time ****
Still enjoy it though and probably much more relaxing without a dog. We normally stay in Salamanca I always book one way. The problem is a pet cabin ****
author: you book direct with Brittany on their site? I don’t need pet cabin - just me cabin am I looking too far in advance? It’s for mid April next year. ****
I book direct. One Way option & yes as far in advance beyond April. ****
I definitely have ndver had that problem and done a one way a few times going from Spain. Last time was April 2022 so unless anything has changed that’s very strange I’ve just tried and it was fine. Hang on I’ll pm you ****

(on another local expat site recently) author: I am very sad. Yesterday I damaged my lovely car, she is a bit of an old girl, 12 years, Mercedes. On top of this she does need a service. Have had her now a year. Where do I take her? Does it have to be a Mercedes garage? Please help. Thank you in advance.
Daniel Parente in El Colorado, he is really good and we go there with our Mercedes as well, he did the service check last time. ****
Re warranty, your car will be out of warranty at 12 years anyway, so it doesn’t matter who does the service.Mine has just gone beyond the 10 years for extended warranty, but I still prefer the main dealer. They offer a monthly service plan, so the cost is spread out over the year, rather than being paid in a subgle lump sum. I’m paying €45/month for an A service + a B service. My last service was a b6. Which one is your car on now? B8? ****
author: thank you for your information. I only bought the car last year. So I honestly don’t know. I will make an appointment for next week. Again thank you so much.
No under EU law you do not need to take it to a registered service station for Mercedes as long as they use Mercedes parts the warranty won’t be invalidated ****
I don’t trust any of these little independent shops in Chiclana, based on the nonsense I’ve seen them try to pull off. I always take mine to Cadimar in jerez. They’re probably slightly pricier than going to a small shop, but at least I know it’s in good hands. Brake pads, filter changes etc are ok to be done at any shop, but when it comes to engine, gearbox, etc, I’d always pick the main dealer ****

(on another local expat site recently) author: Is anyone else concerned about the condition of pedestrian crossings in chiclana? More often I find that people are walking out and then I realise they are on a crossing, but the markings are worn out and not easily seen until you are right on top of them. It seems that the council will pay out for tourist based projects but this affects everyone. Not sure how to proceed with this but feel it needs to be addressed, if anyone has any ideas please let me know
completely agree - I raised this topic last year but couldn't get any information. In the winter mornings on the way to school it is almost impossible to see some of the kids who wear all black and then step onto said crossings - one in particular is the one at the bottom of the Pago del Humo before you get to the Pelagatos - it is treacherous and there is a bus stop right there. I fear there will need to be an accident before anyone does anything ****
Theres an APP you can download called mejora chiclana. You take a picture and save the location and the town hall receives it. I’ve used it a few times and it seems to work, as the problem was fixed and quite fast. ****

(on another local expat site recently) author: add onto pedestrian crossings - see above
that sounds promising, ill give it a try, thanks ****
sounds like a plan, i'm going to take some pics and send them. There are a couple of new crossings either side of the new roundabout on Las Lagunas that already look shabby ****
I have noticed they have started to put flashing cats eyes at crossing that show up very clearly at night so maybe they will roll this out to all crossings soon ****
they are only a few and on the bigger crossings, the smaller ones need looking at ****
Was just talking to someone about this a few days ago. It’s a huge problem. The zebra crossings are barely visible at night ****
There is a really silly law in Cadiz. If you don’t pay your community tax, they don’t come after you until you sell and even then only make you pay 2 years. Get rid of that law and there will be plenty in the pot to take care of all such issues. ****

They are not as spritely as they once were so extreme sports are out the window! Thank you very much for your recommendations. Spend day in Jerez and visit Gonzales Byass home of Tio Pepe. Great place to meander around with plenty of places of interest, good shopping area and excellent bars and restaurants. Perhaps take in a flamenco show in the evening . And don’t forget the Spanish riding school. Easy drive or take train **** Bodega tour! **** Definitely the Bodega visit. The one by Venta Campano is very good but if you want to go further afield then Jerez is a good day out as long as you've got a designated driver **** Tio Pepe Jerez **** Speaking of bodegas, has anyone tried bodegas Miguel guerro in Chiclana? maps.app.goo.gl/AX7CfnMHG7ALGCfU6?g_st=ic **** The ferry from el puerto de Santa Maria to cadi z or visa versa **** Chiclana museum is well worth the visit, and air conditioned if they are feeling the heat **** The horse show in Jerez followed by the Bodega Traditional nearby for great sherry and even better art collection. **** author: Thank you all for your recommendations
