(on another local expat site recently) author: What do people use to split this type of large log (photo) in half length wise?
chainsaw - does it not fit in your burner at that size? ****
we've found that the whole ones don't catch well. Ones we have that are sawn in half so have a flat side seem to light well. ****
Personally you should use kindling and the flat sided ones to start off your fire but then put the whole logs on the top - they burn much slower so it will save you a lot of money. The flat sided logs burn way to quickly. Otherwise - a chainsaw ****
author: that's part of the problem. We haven't enough flat sided ones We have a chainsaw but need something to clamp the wood whilst it's sawn
Splitting maul would do ****
Splitting axe quite cheap to buy in Leroy ****

(on another local expat site recently) author: Anyone purchase a house here in Spain at the same time as selling a house in the UK? As we know selling a house in the UK can take foreverrr after and offer has been accepted. Have you had the experiance where the Spanish seller has been happy to wait for that? And anyone manage put a clause in the contract that they can get their Spanish deposit back if the English sale doesn’t go through for whatever reason? Or are the two systems just completely incompatible and can’t happen simultaneously.
We didn’t, it was about a year apart and that was stressful enough! I wish you luck and also recommend Temple Cambria ****
I know of all kinds of arrangements that might not be possible in the UK happening in Spain. Some friends sold their house to a sitting tenant, half paid up front, the other half over ten years. If the buyer defaults on payment, the house reverts to the sellers ownership. What you're suggesting might be possible, but talk to a good lawyer. Temple Cambria are a good start, ****

I recommend Openbank ( internet bank so no branches but excellent service 24/7 over the phone). Cant recommend La Caixa in El Colorado at all. Am in a course case with Sabadell who have tried a every trick in the book to get out of paying me the 35,000€ they owe me after a court case came out totally in my favour. Sabadell also sold me the famous “ preferentes “ fraudulently and was very lucky to get my money back. Most people didn’t. ****
Sabadell ****
fees and charges? Minimum monthly input? ****
it depends on what you want. I pay in a fixed amount monthly and have home insurance so pay no fees ****

Do you have the name of the shop? ****
author: no I don't. From the foto3 shop walking along the river on the new paseo it's about 30m on the left.
There's also a shop that sells this stuff right in the back of the market in Chiclana. ****

Problem is if you change banks there is no guarantee that they wont move or close down. Happening with many banks in the UK as online banking takes over. I have been with BM for many years, sad there will be no branch in Chiclana but i will stay with them. ****

author: I’m reasonably new here and just visiting Chiclana for a couple of months. So far, I’m impressed with the area and have been looking at homes to buy but now, I would like to explore the possibility of buying land and building. Is there someone here who has first hand experience with building your home and could you share your experiences with me?
We had our place built 20 years ago now, naive is the word. We thought it was all legal, it wasn’t, we were led to believe sharing an electric meter was common and ok, it wasn’t and that the well would supply all our water, it hasn’t. We’ve been through the mill over the years but we are ok and still love it here, just be careful as there is always someone ready to pull your trousers down ****
oh yes we were all very naive in those days. ****
My advice is don't build. It's too complicated and takes forever! Better buy something and reform it. Good luck ****
author: thanks for your opinion. I will keep it in mind
In Chiclana there are many people deceiving, selling rustic plots where you can't build. I advise you to buy an urban plot, it's much more expensive than a rustic one, but you can build legally, with network water and sanitation, the rustics only have contaminated well water, and some without water. I hope I helped you ****
look around first and stay away from pine trees ****
We looked at the cost of building / land and decided to buy a place to reform. The process to build and planning process is very complex and expensive in Spain. We'll, it is if you do it legally. ****
Good afternoon x, we have a registered Architectural firm here in chiclana Concept Architectural Workshop and we will he happy to talk you through the steps over a coffee in building here in chiclana.
author: I am open to speaking with you over a cupper coffee. How about beginning of March?

My boyfriend and I are half way through a 5 week visit here, before we move a little further along the coast for 5 weeks. We are wondering if there is a local quiz night here that we could get involved in? Or a venue where Brits tend to socialise/play cards/rummikub? The lady also said there’s a bar down near the beach that is run by a couple of British chaps, but she wasn’t sure of the name. Does anyone know? Thanks!
Streetcats quiz bubble burger ****
author: sorry if it’s a stupid question… will the quiz be in English
yes it will be! ****
it's not a stupid question😊😊and the funds raised are for such a good cause ****

author: great, thank you! Do you know if there is a quiz night there (or anywhere else locally) quiz nights are held in different place not at Neros. I'm involved in one but next is 20th March - Animals in need online shop (animal rescue) There is also a Street Cats quiz - can't remember when it is ****
just found date for quiz 7th March ****
author: thank you! Where will the quiz be on 7th March?
Bubble Burger, el Campano golf, up on the main road between Chic and El Colorado. ****
Bar Neros - La Barrosa Sorry no quiz nights in Neros. But pop in & see us. For socialising we have many expats/visitors from different origins as well as locals. Take a look at our page

Yes. We do in Conil. Manoli speaks fluent English. ****
fluentish I would say! ****
Well we’ve never ever had a problem understanding each other! And anyway it’s not her responsibility to speak English! It’s a bonus for us Brit clients.****
Mainly use Chiclana, but have called into Pueto Real occasionally, and the counter staff had reasonable English. ****
Manoli speaks English and French if that helps. She can be curt but she's efficient!!! ****
