Returning a Vehicle to the UK 🚘 🇪🇸 🇬🇧

If you’ve previously imported a UK registered vehicle onto Spanish plates and are thinking of returning it and re-registering it in the UK
then you may wonder what steps are necessary and what is the cost. Here we set out a brief guide.

🤓 - DOING IT YOURSELF
It's reasonably easy to re-register your vehicle onto UK plates if it was formerly registered there. Here are the steps:
1. Notify HMRC that you have brought a car back into the UK that you want to import. They will perform a "Nova" Check (Notification of vehicle arrival) to see if you have to pay any duty. You shouldn't have to as the car has previously been registered in the UK.

2. Get form V55/5 from DVLA. This is a triplicate form that they have to post out to you

3. Photocopy ID. DVLA requires photo ID to be enclosed with form V55/5 so send them a copy of both your passport and driving licence.

4. MOT. Get the vehicle MOT'd and enclose the certificate with V55/5

5. Send Spanish registration document with form V55/5 and other docs to DVLA

6. Pay Vehicle Tax or declare off road (SORN V890)
