Hi Folks,
This is an account of my first use of the tram
I was up early and caught the 7-44 tram to Cadiz. The money machine had a different price than advertised! It wanted 5-70€ for a return (ida y regresso) whereas the Diario de Cadiz had said it was 2-60€ each way! I put a ten euro note in to pay for it and had trouble getting my hand through the slot to collect the change in a very deep trough! Later on, I found that a lady friend had had the same problem with retrieving her change! I resolved to pay by card next time.
The tram was empty when I boarded it and I was immediately struck by the fact it wasn’t a level floor but there were two steps down to the seats and then two steps up to sixteen more seats before the driver’s cab! The train set off on time and it stopped for one minute at every stop, whether there were people to get on and off or not.
It took an hour to get to Cadiz, it’s about 40 minutes in a car! I walked towards the cathedral but stopped at the first café for desayuno (2-30€). I then walked past all the shops to the indoor market; I had forgotten just how large the indoor market is in Cadiz, probably three times the size of the Chiclana market and a sight to behold.
I then wandered around making my way towards the bay where I sat down for five minutes to study the time table; there are masses of restaurants and cafes with outdoor seating for lunch, just choose whatever takes your fancy. As I finished my lunch, there was a tram returning from Cadiz to Chiclana in about an hour so, I wandered around the shops making my way back.
Sure enough, a tram from Chiclana soon pulled in and I watched a lady in an electric wheelchair use the lift in the tram to get from the lowest level where there is a special area for wheelchairs, prams and the like, to the upper floor level where an automatic ramp had extended to the platform to allow the wheelchairs to exit at their own convenience.
The journey back was uneventful although I did have to remind a group of three ladies to put their masks on!
