A few weeks ago our Spanish neighbour cleared a lot of the scrub in his parcela next door to us, and just left it in a heap (as they do). This morning he arrived at the parcela and almost immediately set the heap alight (again, as they do), oblivious to the newly grown scrub, his car parked in the parcela, the nearby pine trees - and obviously without a thought about the smoke, smell, and danger to the neighbourhood, or the regulations regarding bonfires, etc. during the summer months. We asked him to put the fire out, and he said he couldn't - BECAUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE ANY WATER!!! We suggested he should smother the fire with earth, but just received a blank look in response. We said if he didn't put it out we would call the Guardia - which made him a little more active - but truthfully, after 18 years here, we wonder if there is anything else "they" can do to make our minds boggle any more. Anyone else have any similar experiences? To sum up, there was a sudden rush of activity in the parcela, the fire appeared to be extinguished, our neighbour got into his car and quickly drove away - and about 5 minutes afterwards a police car arrived. We don't know who had called the police, but obviously there is somebody around with a brain cell. What a relief to our over-boggled minds!
