As I walked into the Florentina at lunchtime today, so I was informed that my friend Mike Roche had died last night.
Mike leaves a son and daughter, and his brother visited him while in the nursing home a short while ago.
For those that don’t know, I first met Mike at Worthing High School for Boys in 1958. We became firm friends and used to ride my family’s tandem at every opportunity; we even talked about cycling to Scotland on it during the summer holidays. We lost touch when Mike went into the Navy at 14 years old.
I bought my house in Pago del Humo in 2002, moving in the April 2003. In my first month, while emptying my old Luton Transit van at the basuras, a car pulled up and a cultured voice said in English “You can’t put that stuff in there”. After chatting he explained that a number of British ex-pats met every Friday at one o’clock at the Hipersol (now Eroski).
So I duly went along and whilst sat at the table Mike said to me “You never did tell me your surname” to which I replied “Fisher”. Mike then said “I thought so, 84 Stone Lane, Worthing” Mike later said he didn’t know whether to watch my face or Ann’s, his wife. Apparently my jaw hit the floor! I hadn’t recognised Mike but he had recognised me.
Mike & I helped around 300 people change their car number plates from British to Spanish so many of you may remember him. Just recently a number of people came forward with crossword puzzles for him. A lovely man who never had a cross word - RIP Mike
