Cont: from prev post (on another local expat site recently) If you want to drink your well water get it tested from time to time by a laboratory in town. I use biocentrol.com/ you can buy a sterile bottle from any Farmacia. Indeed its a good idea to get the water tested regardless as washing food, teeth your body can be a problem if the water has high levels of fecal matter or chemicals. ****

(on another local expat site recently) author: I hope everyone can send this on as it is really important for everyone to know!
1. Let's say it's 7:25pm and you're going home (alone of course) after an unusually hard day on the job. 2. You're really tired, upset and frustrated. 3. Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up in to your jaw. You are only about five km from the hospital nearest your home. 4. Unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far. 5. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself. 6. HOW TO SURVIVE A HEART ATTACK WHEN ALONE? Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. 7. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. 8. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it to regain a normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get help or to a hospital. 9. Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives! 10. A cardiologist says If everyone who gets this email, & kindly sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we'll save at least one life. 11. Rather than sending jokes, please ....... contribute by forwarding this email which can save a person's life.... 12. If this message comes around to you ......more than once.....please don't get irritated.....U need to be happy that you have many friends who care about you & you are being reminded of how to tackle Heart attacks.... when you are alone.

you won't get anything in Chiclana over the counter that has codeine in it. Your best bet is if someone is going to Gibraltar - you can get Solpadeine over the counter and they are the equivalent. Or if someone is visiting you from England they could bring them for you ****

I think the point is that you don't need to visit the medical centre or get an appointment. Online you can get a telephone appointment which is much easier than having to drive somewhere. I speak to my doctor and she promptly sends the repeat prescription to the pharmacy ****

My sister and her husband had it in the UK but I haven't heard of it in Spain ****
author: I know it is available publicly in Murcia but was just checking locally, thanks.
I didn't know it was available in Murcia. Hopefully they'll roll it out in the rest of the autonomous regions ****
It is not offered in Spain, enquired last week. ****
oh yes it is at least in Madrid and just checked it is in other areas in Spain. ****
i asked at my doctors in las casinas and it is not offered there, dont know about anywhere else. ****
look it up Goggle and you will see where it is available in Spain ****
we got it this year from our doctor at Viamed. Must be payed self. Its expensive costs about 380,-- Euro ****
author: Thanks, was the 380 for one vaccine or two?
6-8 weeks distance. ****
Hi I had the Shingrix vaccine 4 weeks ago, made appointment with doc, I had to take a prescription to the pharmacy which I had to pay for and collect the vaccine , then take it to the medical centre for it to be injected, one more in three months and that’s it. Make sure it’s Shingrix it’s 98% effective and lasts for life.cost €280 ****
Thanks to Chifra´s new website and their link to Andalucia Health page it was easy to find the information on vaccines. It seems the shingles (HERPES ZÓSTER) vaccine is only currently available for people with underlying health issues or immunocompromised. Perhaps it will be rolled out in the future to the general/older population. ****

(on another local expat site recently) redaccion medica
author: MARÍA TERESA FERNÁNDEZ March 17, 2022.
Anyone who has had chickenpox is at risk of developing shingles. It is a disease caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV) and its incidence increases in people over 50 years of age. Even so, only nine autonomous communities have included the recommendation of the vaccine against this virus in their vaccination schedules.
Specifically, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, the Basque Country and Valencia have a specific vaccination plan against herpes zoster, including them in their calendars. Thus, by 2022 it would be expected that the rest of the regions would also add this vaccine to their vaccine programs, following the agreement presented at the Public Health Commission in March 2021. As indicated in the vaccination recommendation report presented by According to the Ministry of Health, more than 90 percent of adults have been infected with VZV and can therefore develop shingles . Thus, it is estimated that the risk of having the virus is around 30 percent throughout life, and can reach 50 percent in people aged 85 years or older.

(on another local expat site recently) author: The Guardian Newspaper
‘It’s not worth risking your life’: fears over painkiller Nolotil grow for Brits in Spain Links between the deaths of UK patients and the popular drug have spurred on action among expats in Jávea and beyond As Britain faced widespread frosts last week, there were blue skies, a warm breeze and temperatures above 20C on white sand beaches dotted with palm trees in Jávea on the Costa Blanca. People who spoke to the Observer last week say they enjoy the benefits of a typically efficient Spanish national health service. However, there is increasing concern in Jávea and other communities across the country about one of its most popular drugs: the painkiller metamizole, commonly sold in Spain as Nolotil.
Nolotil is supposed to be prescription only but is widely available over the counter. The Observer was able to purchase two packets of Nolotil on Tuesday at a chemist’s in Jávea for less than €4, without a prescription. The Spanish health ministry said it had conducted a review in 2018 after it was notified about cases of agranulocytosis, particularly in patients of British origin. It said a greater risk in certain populations could not be confirmed, but new guidelines were introduced in 2018 to reduce the risk, including the recommendation not to use the drug in “floating populations” that could not be monitored.
It said an epidemiological study was also commissioned and while it has not yet been published it indicated the magnitude of risk is within currently known and managed levels. It said agranulocytosis was a known adverse reaction to metamizole and that reports of these reactions were collected and publicly available.
In rare cases the drug, withdrawn in several countries, can cause a condition known as agranulocytosis, which depletes white blood cells, increasing the risk of potentially fatal infection. A patients group, the Association of Drug Affected Patients (ADAF), says adverse reactions have led to sepsis, organ failure and amputations. Many Britons who live in Spain say they would not take Nolotil because of the risk of side effects. The ADAF has produced “No Nolotil” wristbands for patients to wear when receiving healthcare.
People need to be vigilant when being prescribed medication. Husband was prescribed Nolotil earlier this year here in Chiclana. ****

I had a hip replacement at Puerto due to a nasty fall where I broke it. *****
author: do you remember who your doctor was? How was recovery?
no sorry. I’m afraid I had to have a catheter put in and that gave me lots of trouble but afterwards it was okay lots of pain meds and a slow recovery. I had one of those pregnancy pillows to stop me rolling in bed and a commode and higher loo seat. Also a walker. No after care at home was given or physiotherapy. Mine was worse because my husband was seriously ill with cancer. It was a slow recovery but I am absolutely fine now. I’m 74. ****

I was too late to join that day’s emergency list so had to wait 24 hours for the operation, medicated by morphine over night. All went well and I was discharged 5 days later. It seems that you have to source your own crutches and any of the apparatus to use at home. There was no physio therapy provided so I followed a regime from the Internet. I had a follow up appointment for 10 weeks but I did not have one for 10 months as Covid was in full swing by then. I have made a good recovery and would regard it as a success story. The treatment in hospital was very good and I felt I was well cared for by the staff. I wasn’t looked after by any particular surgeon as it was the emergency team who performed the operation. Good luck if you are going ahead. ****

They charge a 50€ deposit to get your choice/suggested scooter into store which is refundable if you purchase it. There’s a great English guy in Fuengirola who services, supplies & insures scooters. A specialist centre in Lebrija with onsite workshop for alterations & service. Neither on the doorstep but these machines are a disabled person’s access to mobility & need to be fitted to suit.
